List of Bible Women

Bible Woman - Abigail: Wife of Nabal the Carmelite, and later the wife of David. 1 Samuel 25 His name was Nabal and his wife's name was Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband, a Calebite, was surly and mean in his dealings.

Bible Woman - Asenath: Egyptian woman given to Joseph by the Pharaoh to be Joseph's wife. Genesis 41:45 Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-Paneah and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife.

Bible Woman - Priscilla: Priscilla and her husband Aquila were tentmakers in Corinth who became companions of Paul. Acts 18:1-3 After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them.

Bible Woman - Dinah: Daughter of Jacob and Leah. Genesis 34:3-6 Shechem's heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her. And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife." When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he kept quiet about it until they came home.

Bible Woman - Gomer: The wife of the prophet Hosea who committed adultery but was forgiven by Hosea. Hosea 3:1 The Lord said to me, "Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes."

Bible Woman - Jael: The heroine who killed general Sisera, luring him into her tent and then driving a tent peg into his skull. Judges 4:18 Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, "Come, my Lord , come right in. Don't be afraid." So he entered her tent, and she put a covering over him.

Bible Woman - The Levite's Concubine: This unnamed woman was raped by the men of Gibeah. Judges 19:27-29 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. He said to her, "Get up; let's go." But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home. When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.

Bible Woman - Michal: The daughter of King Saul, and wife of David. 1 Samuel 19:11 Saul sent men to David's house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, warned him, "If you don't run for your life tonight, tomorrow you'll be killed."

Bible Woman - Potiphar's wife: The wife of Joseph's master, Potiphar, who tried to seduce Joseph and then accused him of rape. Genesis 39: 6-7 Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!"

Bible Woman - Rahab: The harlot of Jericho who assisted the spies of the Israelite army. Joshua 6:17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent.

Bible Woman - Salome and Herodias: On behalf of her mother, Herodias (the wife of Herod), Salome asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Mark 6:18-19 For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him.

Bible Woman - Sarah: The wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac. Genesis 21:6-7 Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me." And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."

Bible Woman - Vashti: Vashti was the wife of King Ahasuerus who refused the King's command to show off her beauty. Esther 1:12 But when the attendants delivered the king's command, Queen Vashti refused to come. Then the king became furious and burned with anger.

Bible Woman - Zipporah: Zipporah, the daughter of the Midianite priest Jethro, was married to Moses. Exodus 4:24-26 At a lodging place on the way, the Lord met {Moses} and was about to kill him. But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son's foreskin and touched {Moses'} feet with it. "Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me," she said. So the Lord let him alone.

Bible Woman - The wife of Pontius Pilate: The wife of Pontius Pilate warned him not to have anything to do with Jesus. Matthew 27:19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."

Bible Woman - The Shunammite woman: In return for her hospitality, the prophet Elisha restored her son to life. 2 Kings 4:8-10 One day Elisha went to Shunem. And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat. She said to her husband, "I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. Let's make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us."

Bible Woman - The Witch of Endor: King Saul consulted the witch of Endor in order to summon the ghost of the prophet Samuel. 1 Samuel 28:10-11 Saul swore to her by the Lord, "As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this." Then the woman asked, "Whom shall I bring up for you?" "Bring up Samuel," he said.

Bible Woman - Tamar: Tamar was the daughter of King David and was raped by her half-brother Amnon. 2 Samuel 13:10-11 Then Amnon said to Tamar, "Bring the food here into my bedroom so I may eat from your hand." And Tamar took the bread she had prepared and brought it to her brother Amnon in his bedroom. But when she took it to him to eat, he grabbed her and said, "Come to bed with me, my sister."

Bible Woman - The Woman of Timnah: The first wife of Samson was a Philistine woman from Timnah. Judges 14:1-3 Samson went down to Timnah and saw there a young Philistine woman. When he returned, he said to his father and mother, "I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife." His father and mother replied, "Isn't there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?"
But Samson said to his father, "Get her for me. She's the right one for me."

Bible Woman - Ruth and Naomi: The Book of Ruth tells the story of Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi, both of them widows, who travel to Naomi's homeland in search of food. Ruth 1:15-17 "Look," said Naomi, "your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her." But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me."

Bible Woman - Rachel: The daughter of Laban who became Jacob's wife and mother of his sons Joseph and Benjamin. Genesis 29:18 -20 Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, "I'll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel." Laban said, "It's better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me." 20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

Bible Woman - Pharaoh's daughter: The daughter of Pharaoh rescued the infant Moses from the river and adopted him. Exodus 2:5-6 Then Pharaoh's daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him.

Bible Woman - Mary: Mary, the wife of Joseph, was the mother of Jesus. Luke 1:46-49 And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me - holy is his name.

Bible Woman - Leah: A daughter of Laban, she married Jacob and was the mother of his sons Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah. Genesis 29:31-32 When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, "It is because the Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now."

Bible Woman - Huldah: Huldah is a prophetess who communicated the word of god to the priests and officials of Jerusalem. 2 Kings 22:14 Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Acbor, Shaphan and Asaiah went to speak to the prophetess Huldah, who was the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District.

Bible Woman - Eve: Eve, the first woman, was created to be a companion to Adam, the first man. Genesis 3:20 fAdam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.

Bible Woman - Delilah: The woman who betrayed Samson to the Philistines by discovering the secret of his strength. Judges 16:18-19 When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, "Come back once more; he has told me everything." So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands. Having put him to sleep on her lap, she called a man to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him.

Bible Woman - Bilhah and Zilpah: Bilhah was Rachel's handmaid and Zilpah was Leah's handmaid; they both had children with Rachel and Leah's husband, Jacob. Genesis 30:4-5 So Rachel gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her, and she became pregnant and bore him a son.

Bible Woman - Anna: Anna was the wife of Tobit, and the mother of Tobias. Tobit 2:11-12 At that time, also, my wife Anna earned money at women's work. She used to send what she made to the owners and they would pay wages to her. One day, the seventh of Dystrus, when she cut off a piece she had woven and sent it to the owners, they paid her full wages and also gave her a young goat for a meal.

Bible Woman - The widow at Zarephath; The widow gives her last food to the prophet Elijah, and by a miracle she receives unlimited food in return, and Elijah restored her son to life. 1 Kings 17:22-24 The Lord heard Elijah's cry, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived. Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, "Look, your son is alive!" Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth."

Bible Woman - Susanna: Susanna, falsely accused by two old men who had tried to rape her, was vindicated by the prophet Daniel. Daniel 13:20-23 The two elders said, "Look, the garden doors are shut, and no one can see us. We are burning with desire for you; so give your consent, and lie with us. If you refuse, we will testify against you that a young man was with you, and this was why you sent your maids away." Susanna groaned and said, "I am completely trapped. For if I do this, it will mean death for me; if I do not, I cannot escape your hands. I choose not to do it; I will fall into your hands, rather than sin in the sight of the Lord."

Bible Woman - The wife of Manoah: An angel appeared to the wife of Manoah and told her that she would bear a son, Samson. Judges 13:6 Then the woman went to her husband and told him, "A man of God came to me. He looked like an angel of God, very awesome. I didn't ask him where he came from, and he didn't tell me his name."

Bible Woman - Rizpah: When Rizpah's sons were executed, she watched over their bodies for five months until they were finally taken down and given burial. 2 Samuel 21:10 Rizpah daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it out for herself on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest till the rain poured down from the heavens on the bodies, she did not let the birds of the air touch them by day or the wild animals by night.

Bible Woman - Puah and Shiphrah: Puah and Shiprah were Hebrew midwives who defied Pharaoh's order to kill the male children. Exodus 1:15-17 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, "When you help the Hebrew women in childbirth and observe them on the delivery stool, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live." The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.

Bible Woman - The mother of seven sons: This mother watched King Antiochus execute her seven sons, one by one, who died rather than to deny God. 4 Maccabees 15:22-24: How great and how many torments the mother then suffered as her sons were tortured on the wheel and with the hot irons! But devout reason, giving her heart a man's courage in the very midst of her emotions, strengthened her to disregard her temporal love for her children. Although she witnessed the destruction of seven children and the ingenious and various rackings, this noble mother disregarded all these because of faith in God.

Bible Woman - Mary Magdalene: Mary Magdalene was a devoted follower of Jesus. Mark 16:9-11 When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it.

Bible Woman - Judith: Judith managed to seduce the enemy general Holofernes, whom she then beheaded. Judith 13:6 She went up to the bedpost near Holofernes' head, and took down his sword that hung there. She came close to his bed, took hold of the hair of his head, and said, "Give me strength today, O Lord God of Israel!" Then she struck his neck twice with all her might, and cut off his head.

Bible Woman - Lot's wife: As Lot and his family fled the city of Sodom, his wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt. Genesis 19:23-26 By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Bible Woman - Sarah: Sarah's husbands were killed, one after another, by a demon, Asmodeus, until Tobias and the angel Raphael vanquished the demon. Tobit 7:12 Then Raguel summoned his daughter Sarah. When she came to him he took her by the hand and gave her to Tobias,h saying, "Take her to be your wife in accordance with the law and decree written in the book of Moses. Bible Woman - Tamar: Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah, son of Jacob, and gave birth to his twin sons. Genesis 38:15-16 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, "Come now, let me sleep with you."

Bible Woman - The Samaritan woman: Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, and tells her that is the Messiah. John 4:11-13 "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?" Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.

Bible Woman - Rebekah: Rebekah helped her son Jacob deceive his father, Isaac. Genesis 27:15-17 Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins. Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

Bible Woman - The Queen of Sheba: The Queen of Sheba traveled to Jerusalem to meet King Solomon. 1 Kings 10:1-2 When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relation to the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions. Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravan—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind.

Bible Woman - Miriam: Miriam was the sister of Moses and Aaron. Exodus 15:20-21 Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing. Miriam sang to them: "Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea."

Bible Woman - Martha: The sister of Lazarus and Mary, who was rebuked by Jesus for her preoccupation with earthly worries. Luke 10:39-40 Martha had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"

Bible Woman - Jezebel: Jezebel is the wife of King Ahab, and urged him to worship the Phoenician god, Baal. 1 Kings 21:23 And also concerning Jezebel the Lord says: 'Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.' Dogs will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds of the air will feed on those who die in the country.

Bible Woman - Hannah: Hannah was the wife of Elkanah, childless for many years until she gave birth to the prophet Samuel. 1 Samuel 1:15 Hannah replied, "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief."

Bible Woman - Daughters of Lot: Lot's daughters escaped from Sodom with their father and then conceived his children. Genesis 19:30-32 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. One day the older daughter said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. Let's get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father."

Bible Woman - Hagar: Hagar was the handmaid of Sarah, wife of Abraham, and she gave birth to Ishmael, Abraham's son. Sarah grew jealous and ordered Abraham to send Hagar and her son away. Genesis 21:14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the desert of Beersheba.

Bible Woman - Abishag: Abishag was the woman chosen to warm King David in his old age. 1 Kings 1:1 When King David was old and well advanced in years, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. So his servants said to him, "Let us look for a young virgin to attend the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm." Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful girl and found Abishag, a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

Bible Woman - Bathsheba: The beautiful wife of Uriah the Hittite who later became the wife of King David. 2 Samuel 11:2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her.

Bible Woman - Jephthah's daughter: In battle, Jephthah vowed to give to God whoever first greeted him returning home, and so was compelled to give up his daughter. Judges 11:34-35 When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, "Oh! My daughter! You have made me miserable and wretched, because I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break."

Bible Woman - Elizabeth: The wife of Zacharias and mother of John the Baptist. Luke 1:41-42 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!

Bible Woman - Deborah: A prophetess and judge in ancient Israel. Judges 4:4-5 Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading [a] Israel at that time. She held court under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites came to her to have their disputes decided.

Bible Woman - Athaliah: The daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel who became the queen of Judah. 2 Kings 11:1 When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family. But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes, who were about to be murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah; so he was not killed.

Bible Woman - Anna: Anna was an elderly widow who greeted Jesus when his parents brought him to the temple. Luke 2:37-38 She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

Bible Woman - Esther: Esther, wife of King Ahasuerus, managed to save the Jewish people from the murderous plot of the King's prime minister, Haman. Esther 7:3-4 Then Queen Esther answered, "If I have found favor with you, O king, and if it pleases your majesty, grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my people—this is my request. For I and my people have been sold for destruction and slaughter and annihilation.
