Week 9 Extra Reading: Ramakien, Part I

104. Hanuman returns to Pra Ram. Totsakan welcomes Hanuman, confident in victory the next day. Then, the next day Hanuman rides out with Totsakan, and then shoots up into the air, blows out stars as the prearranged signal with Ongkot, who flies with Hanuman to bring Totsakan's heart to Ram. Hanuman, Ongkot and Ram then returned to the battlefield, and Hanuman taunted Totsakan with the jar. Hanuman offers to trade the jar for Sida, but Totsakan refuses.

105. Totsakan's farewell. Totsakan returns to Monto and tells her he will die the next day. She urges him to return Sida; he refuses. Monto and his other wives follow him weeping into battle the next day. With sad thoughts he entered his last battle.

106. Totasakan's last battle. Totsakan has taken on Indra's form, and Rama cannot shoot. Hanuman urges him to ignore the illusion. Rama fired the fatal shot. Totsakan pronounced blessings and wishes on Monto an dhis wives and on Pipek. Hanuman crushed the soul jar. Monto and Kala Akee came running out, wild with grief. Pipek goes to fetch Sida, along with Monto, Kala Akee, Djantawadee and Suwanna Kanyuma.

107. Sida undergoes trial by fire. Sida worries that Ram will not believe she was able to reject Totsakan's advances for almost fourteen years. Pipek tells her not to worry: "Gold, even though it is in mud, is still gold." Ram wanted to embrace her but knew he had to prove her innocence to all the Three Worlds. Rama asks her if she had gifts from Totsakan to show; this made Sida feel terrible. "To be a woman is very difficult," she thought, "because we are always blamed for everything." The gods and goddesses come to witness her trial by fire. She walked through the fire, and Rama brought her up to the throne. Pipek became king of Longka, and Treechada his queen, and Monto his other queen.

108. Pra Ram kills Atsakan. Totsakireewan and Totsakireetorn brought news to King Atsakan of Duram, their foster father, and he wanted to fight Rama. Cut in half, there were two Atsakans who fought. He kept multiplying, and there were a thousand Atsakans fighting the monkeys, but Rama shattered him into slivers and blew them off into the ocean. Rama had to return to Ayutaya so that Prot and Satrud would not burn themselves up as the exile expired. Rama and his army crossed the bridge, and then destroyed it behind them.

109. Banlaikan tries to avenge his father. Banlaikan, son of Totsakan and Kala Akee, grew up in Bada with his grandfather Kala Nak. Totsakan had called him in a dream but when he reached Longka, Totsakan was already dead. He vows revenge and takes Totsakan's bow and arrow to go slay the monkey army. Hanuman disguised himself as a water buffalo in Banlaikan's path. Hanuman tries to warn him, and then they fight; Hanuman takes on his monkey form. Pipek had warned Hanuman Banlaikan was slippery thanks to a special plant juice. He left a double fighting Banlaikan and went to hermit Titsapai Munee for advice. Titsapai says he cannot take life, but he lets sand run through his hand as a clue. Hanuman covers Banlaikan with sand, kills him, and brings his head to Rama.

110. The march home. Nilapat was ruling in Kheet Khin. Dara was glad to have Sukreep return. Rama meets old friends along the way. Prot and Satrud have prepared their pyre, but Hanuman and Khukkhan arrive just in time, and the three queens rejoice. Rama arrives and he forgives Kaiyakesee. Rama is crowned king.

111. The division of the kingdom. Lak becomes king of Romakan. Prot and Satrud would be Rama's vice-kings. Hanuman became king of half of Ayutaya, ruling as King Anuchit, Mighty Friend. All the main characters get their new titles, and sometimes they take new names. Ram is worried about whether Pipek can function as king, so he arranges a monthly arrow-message. Hanuman was unhappy on the throne so Rama shot an arrow into heaven, promising to build Hanuman a city wherever it fell. Hanuman gets overeager, but Rama fixes things, and the city is called Nop Buree. Hanuman still visits Rama once a week.

112. Maha Ban lays siege to Longka. Totsakan's friend Maha Ban, ruler of Djakrawan, comes to Longka, hears what has happened, and vows to destroy Pipek. Hanuman came to help defend Pipek. Battle breaks out. Hanuman is victorious, and has a reunion with Benjakai. Pipek sends his servant Paowanasoon to rule Djakrawan.

113. Paina Suriwong learns the secret of his birth. Monto has a son, Paina Suriyawong. Pipek thinks it is his son, but Totsakan is the true father. Benjakai has Hanuman's son and names him Asuraphad. One day Hanuman goes to eat mangos, throwing mangos down on his wives and being a bad monkey. He got covered with mango juice and the ladies laughed at him; he was ashamed and wanted to go live as a hermit with Titsapai Rusee on Mount Mondop Singkkhorn. To be with Titsapai he put on a human form. Paina Suriyawong and Asuraphad were best friends. Paina went to play in the garden with his nurse Woraneesoon. They went into Sida's old pavilion, and the nurse revealed Totsakan was his father. Monto told paina it was true. Now Paina hated Pipek, and went to find King Djakrawat in Maliwan, Totsakan's last friend. Monto urges him not to seek vengeance: "It is better to be Pra Narai's lowliest slave than his mightiest enemy!"

114. Paina Suriwong conquers Longka. Monto gives Paina a diamond wine cup as a recognition token to give to Djakrawat. Paina trains with the hermit Kan the Black. The seer Prutadjan interpreted a dream of Paina's coming, and Djakrawat receives him gladly and agreed to attack Longka. Paina returned home, concealing his plan. Then Djakrawat arrived, and Pipek prepared to fight. Paina asked Djakrawat to spare Pipek when they conquered the city. Djakrawat bound Pipek with the Nakabat serpent-arrow, and proclaimed Paina king.
